Hosted online by Fab City Barcelona during the global COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Fab City Summit marked the first fully distributed edition of the gathering. What would normally be a physical convening became a global digital exchange connecting cities, makers, researchers, and policymakers across time zones. The discussions focused on resilience, distributed production, and the role of local fabrication networks during times of crisis. The pandemic highlighted how maker communities and Fab Labs could rapidly mobilize to produce essential equipment and support local responses. Rather than slowing the movement, the online format expanded participation and strengthened connections across the network. The Summit reinforced the relevance of locally productive ecosystems and accelerated conversations around distributed collaboration, open knowledge, and the practical implementation of the Fab City model.
