Shaping the Future of Makerspaces in Africa & Europe: Recommendations for Policy Makers
The context
Makerspaces are dynamic spaces that merge traditional craftsmanship with advanced digital fabrication technologies such as 3D printers and laser cutters. They play a vital role in education, STEM outreach, job creation, and community development. Despite their potential, makerspaces face significant challenges, including underdeveloped surrounding infrastructure, high costs of digital tools and equipment, expensive rental fees, and low political recognition. To effectively scale and harness their capabilities, makerspaces require strong support from governments and key stakeholders.
